DESCRIPTION:Course overview\nThe issue of de-blending (segregation) of bulk particulates is one that afflicts many diverse industry sectors.  For single materials and blended materials the presence of segregation within a process can be apparent as fluctuations in bulk density\, chemical composition\, shifts in size distribution or even unpredictable flowability issues.  These types of problems invariably lead to the generation of waste through out of range product weights (tablets/ pack fill)\, poor processing characteristics or variable quality end products in general. \nThis short course covers: \n\nIdentification of the most commonly encountered segregation mechanisms\nExamples of how segregation has occurred in plant\nTechniques that can be applied in plant design to minimise these effects\n\nDifferent types of segregation will also be identified; air-induced\, rolling\, surface effect\, percolation.

SUMMARY:Electrostatics in Powder Handling - The Wolfson Centre
DESCRIPTION:Course overview\nElectrostatic charges generated during industrial powder handling processes may give rise to unwanted particle cohesion or adhesion\, which in turn results in difficulties such as particle agglomeration\, segregation\, material build-up on equipment and ignition of explosion\, etc. Its impact is felt in terms of lower production yields and increased process downtime\, or high risks to safety in manufacture. \nThe charges are most likely generated by tribo-charging\, which arises from particle-particle and particle-wall contacts. Its behaviour is erratic and not easy to predict. Nevertheless it is always desirable to characterize the charging tendency of raw materials so that corrective action can be taken prior to full scale manufacture. \nCourse content\nThis course discusses the causes and effect of electrostatic charge in bulk solids handling\, and  the hazards caused to product quality control and risk assessment. Principal charge measurement techniques are reviewed and their use in the prediction and solution of problems discussed.
