Over the past 87 years, the presidents of the Materials Handling Engineers’ Association (MHEA) have come and gone, each leaving their mark on the organisation. While their contributions should never be forgotten, uncovering their legacies proved to be a more challenging task than I initially anticipated. When I first set out to research these individuals, it seemed relatively straightforward. Many of the more recent presidents were figures I either knew personally or had some familiarity with, which made the search easier. However, as I ventured further back in time, the task became progressively more difficult.
One of the primary challenges I faced was the scarcity of photographs of many of the past presidents. While some images remain, a significant number of key individuals appear to have no surviving visual records. This absence only compounded the difficulty of piecing together the full history of these leaders. To make matters worse, a longstanding tradition of recording only the initials of individuals, rather than their full names, further complicated my efforts. This habit left me with incomplete and often cryptic references, making it hard to connect the dots and accurately document their contributions.
Despite these hurdles, after months of diligent research and effort, I have managed to compile the information presented below. However, my search is far from complete. If anyone reading this has additional information, photographs, or insights about presidents whose details I have yet to uncover, I would be immensely grateful for your assistance. Your help would be invaluable in ensuring that these important figures are properly remembered and honoured for their roles in shaping the MHEA.

Frank Lonsdale was President Between 1938 – 1946 and founded the Association
Frank’s extensive background within the engineering industry included prominent roles as a director at Fraser Chalmers Engineering and later at the General Electric Company, Ltd., where he contributed to the advancement of modern engineering practices and technologies.
The Fraser and Chalmers Engineering works, located in Erith, once boasted a workforce exceeding 3,000 employees, showcasing its importance in the local economy and the engineering landscape of the time. The U.S. based company purchased the site in 1891 for £800 per acre, transforming it from a recreational ground into a bustling manufacturing hub. This transition marked the beginning of a new era, with production starting later that same year. In 1918, the company underwent a significant change when it was taken over by G.E.C., further solidifying its influence in the engineering field.
Frank, served as President of the MHEA from its inception in 1938 until 1946 and left an enduring legacy. At the time of his death, he was sixty-eight years old and remains the longest-serving president in the organisation’s history.
Born 1884 – Died 1952
Mr. L. Shaw-Davis took on the role of President in 1946. His leadership marked a significant change in the Association’s governance, as it introduced the tradition of one-year presidential terms. This practice became the standard and was adhered to consistently for over five decades, shaping the structure and continuity of leadership within the Association. It was not until 1999 that this tradition was revised, allowing for longer terms and a shift in leadership dynamics.
Mr Purnell’s period of his leadership was characterised by significant change in the field of materials handling a time when post-war industrial growth, modernisation, and evolving engineering practices presented both challenges and opportunities for associations like MHEA.
In 1950 the Mechanical Handling Engineers Association hosted a delegation of French materials-handling manufacturers at the Mechanical Handling Exhibition in London, following an OECD “productivity mission” which had recommended closer European collaboration.
At a joint Franco-British banquet in London in 1952, Ralph Purnell took up those recommendations and proposed the creation of a European organisation of materials-handling manufacturers. When that body was founded as FEM the European Materials Handling Federation (Fédération Européenne de la Manutention).
Ralph Purnell (United Kingdom) was elected its first President, with headquarters in Paris.
David Cherry Paterson ( was a Scottish engineer and co-founder of The Paterson Hughes Engineering Company Limited.
In 1921, Paterson partnered with Albert Harry Hughes to establish The Paterson Hughes Engineering Company Limited, located at 36 Charlotte Lane, Glasgow. The company specialised in industrial handling systems, including the production of overhead travelling cranes for dockyards.
The firm was incorporated as a private company with a capital of £4,000, taking over the business of Thomson-Knox Co, engineers, at the same address.
By 1939, David had relocated to Moorside, Beeches Road, Farnham Common, where he lived with his wife. During this period, he held the position of Director/Engineer.
The Paterson Hughes Engineering Company Limited continued operations for several decades, contributing to various industrial projects, including the supply of sand elevating and conveying equipment to a new foundry in Sheffield in 1925. The company was eventually dissolved in 1989.
Born 1888 Died 1969

In 1956, T.W. Fox Engineering (Midlands) Limited was established, with its registered office located at Churchbridge, Oldbury, West Midlands.
There is also evidence to suggest that he served as an agent in the Special Operations Executive (SOE) during World War II. Williams personnel file, covering the years 1939 to 1946, is held at The National Archives in Kew.
While the specific details of his missions and contributions remain classified or unrecorded in publicly accessible sources, his inclusion in the SOE personnel files indicates his involvement in clandestine operations during the war.
Sadly there are no images of William or his company.
