A win for ProSpare & STARCLEAN® at the MPA Health & Safety Awards 2024

ProSpare, and its Bulk Materials team, have been named winner for an outstanding health and safety improvement at the Mineral Products Association (MPA) Health and Safety Awards 2024 – with STARCLEAN® belt cleaners picking up the award for the success at an Express Asphalt plant.

The MPA Health & Safety Awards 2024 celebrate and share the health and safety innovations and achievements from across MPA members and the wider industry. Having taken place virtually for the first time, the ceremony featured a series of specially commissioned videos showcasing the best in good practice from the finalists.

142 entries from 33 companies were received for this years’ event, and the ProSpare entry won in the topic of “Safer handling of inbound and outbound materials”.  At Express Asphalt, part of the Aggregate Industries group, a STARCLEAN® belt cleaner significantly improved safety on a critical belt conveyor.

ProSpare’s installation of a STARCLEAN® scraper nullified a significant carryback problem experienced on the site’s main incline conveyor. The site previously had to clean-up piles of carryback from under the conveyor on a daily basis. Since installing STARCLEAN®, housekeeping requirements are now at a now a bare minimum, with the site team estimating a saving of 350 hours of material clean-up and 72 hours of maintenance over three years under the single conveyor.

Each of these hours saved equates to a vast reduction in exposure to common risks associated with maintenance and housekeeping of conveyors. As a result, STARCLEAN® helped tackle the elements from the MPA’s Fatal 6 and reduced the need for a back-breaking, and ultimately non-productive, task from the site team’s daily activities.

James Bullock, CEO of ProSpare, said: “Conveyors are a common sight across virtually all materials handling facilities in the UK. With this recognition, it is great to demonstrate the safety and wellbeing gains that can be made through efficient belt cleaning.”

“It’s fantastic to see the hard work of our team rewarded at the MPA Awards, particularly having placed in two categories (our sister company ConSpare was also a finalist). As UK master reseller, this award is a testament to the innovative engineering built into STARCLEAN®.”

John Tuckley, General Manager, said: “STARCLEAN® belt cleaners solve major problems for our customers by reducing hazards associated with daily site tasks, and it’s a real honour to have had this recognised by the industry’s leading association.”
