GLENSANDA QUARRY – MEMBER SITE VISIT

MHEA MEMBERS EXPERIENCE EUROPES’S LARGEST GRANITE QUARRY

MHEA members recently had the opportunity to visit the remarkable Glensanda Quarry, owned and operated by Holcim. Despite less-than-ideal weather conditions, the visit proved to be an unforgettable experience, showcasing the sheer scale and efficiency of what is recognised as the largest granite quarry in Europe.

The day began with a comprehensive presentation from Sandy Black and the Glensanda team, who provided members with an excellent overview of the quarry’s history, operations, production processes and logistics. This introductory session gave valuable context ahead of the site tour, helping attendees appreciate the complexity and scale of the operation before seeing it first-hand.

Located on the remote west coast of Scotland, Glensanda is an extraordinary operation that combines cutting-edge engineering, logistics and production processes to deliver millions of tonnes of high-quality granite aggregate each year.

Following the presentation, members were given a comprehensive tour of the site, gaining valuable insight into the various stages of the operation. Highlights included visits to:

  • The primary crushing plant, where extracted rock begins its journey through the processing system.
  • The extensive tunnel network, an impressive feat of engineering that enables efficient movement of material throughout the site.
  • Aggregate storage facilities, demonstrating the scale of production and stock management.
  • The ship-loading operation, where members witnessed how material is loaded directly onto vessels for transport to markets across the UK and beyond.
  • The central control room, providing a fascinating overview of the technology and monitoring systems used to manage the entire operation.
  • The maintenance facilities, where the importance of reliability, preventative maintenance and engineering excellence was clearly demonstrated.

Members were particularly impressed by the scale of the operation, the attention to safety and the professionalism of the Holcim team. Seeing the various elements of the quarry working together highlighted the immense planning, coordination and expertise required to operate a site of this magnitude.

The day served as a powerful reminder of the impressive engineering, logistics, and operational excellence that underpin one of Europe’s most significant quarrying operations. The visit was both informative and inspiring, leaving members with a greater appreciation of the scale, complexity and innovation involved in modern quarrying.

The MHEA would like to extend its sincere thanks to Mike Bruce, Sandy Black and Linda Flannigan, and the entire Holcim Glensanda team for their warm welcome, hospitality and willingness to share their knowledge and expertise. Site visits such as these provide invaluable learning opportunities for members and help strengthen understanding across the minerals and extractives industry.
