HOPE CEMENT WORKS – MEMBER SITE VISIT

On the  15th April, MHEA Members were given the opportunity for a fantastic and insightful visit to Hope Cement Works and were given a detailed look at one of the UK’s largest and most advanced cement manufacturing facilities.

The day began with a comprehensive presentation covering the full process from raw material extraction through to finished cement, setting the scene for a highly engaging site walkaround.

Walking the site, it was impressive to see the scale and integration of operations firsthand. From raw materials reception through to milling and the pyro-processing stage, the kiln system stood out in particular where the milled materials are heated and transformed at temperatures of around 1450°C into clinker. The clinker cooling and storage systems further highlighted the efficiency of the process, with heat recovery playing a key role throughout.

Members had the chance to see the rail operation in action, which plays a crucial role in reducing reliance on road transport, helping to minimise local disruption and lower environmental impact.

We also had the opportunity to explore the new materials handling and storage system designed to handle alternative raw materials (The ARM Project). This included an overview of this recently completed project and an explanation of the challenges that had to be overcome to deliver this significant infrastructure project within the operational areas of the site.

The visit concluded with a forward-looking session on environmental initiatives, including carbon capture and the development of a future pipeline to transport emissions for permanent offshore storage as part of a wider industrial cluster collaboration.

Most importantly, the visit was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The level of openness, detail and engagement throughout was excellent.  A huge thanks go to Dr. Edward Cavanagh, (Industrial & Innovations Director), Mr Simon Young (Strategic Projects Lead) and Mr Mark Dormer (Construction Manager, Hope Carbon Capture Project) of the Breedon Group for taking time out of their very busy schedule to host such a fantastic and insightful visit.

A great example of industry collaboration in action, and a valuable insight into both the complexity of cement production and the journey towards a more sustainable future.

The evening prior to the site visit, we hosted a dinner for all MHEA members including those unable to attend the visit itself.  We were delighted that the Breedon team joined us and everyone agreed it was a fantastic networking opportunity, bringing together colleagues, industry peers and new connections in a relaxed and engaging setting.
